In the Maritime Museum Rotterdam young and old can enjoy the rich maritime world of Rotterdam and the Netherlands. Also don’t miss the free Harbourmuseum, the oldest of the Netherlands. The Maritime Museum Rotterdam won the Museum award 2018.

Permanent collection

The Maritime Museum Rotterdam has a diverse collection that contains ship models, paintings, cartography, pictures, furniture of ships, clothes and navigation equipment, amongst others. The core collection dates from 1852 and these days the permanent collection contains more than 850.000 objects of six centuries of maritime history. The collections illustrates the Dutch maritime history form prehistoric canoe till the hightech offshore world. Top pieces are the Mataró model (the oldest shipping model of Europe), the Itinerario of Jan Huygen van Linschoten (one of the most important travel resports) and a map of top cartographer Joan Blaeu (a collection of VOC-maps that for hundred of years were stalled in England).

Maritime Museum for children

The Maritime Museum Rotterdam has a lot to offer for children. The ‘Kinder-Doe-Tentoonstelling Professor Plons’ for example will learn children from 4 to 12 year about ships and the Port of Rotterdam. Or check out the spectacular ‘Offshore Experience’.

Besides the Maritime Museum in the old Leuvehaven the Harbour Museum is situated. Here are cranes and historical ships from the 19th and 20th century that still sail.  and in the summer months you can join a trip on the water.
